Spring Community ASL Class – Session 2

Event Description: The class meets every week beginning on Wednesday, April 15 – May 20, from 5:45 – 7:00 pm. (April 15, 22, 29 & May 6, 13, 20) Event Cost: $50/per person (for 6 classes) – limited to 15 participants Class Objective: The participants will learn the manual alphabet, numbers, WH-Questions, 100 basic signs (from ASL University and ASL That!), basic conversation words and phrases (from Meredith ASL), and Deaf Culture. This basic ASL class is not designed to certify those who are interested in becoming interpreters. No Voice Policy: The participants will learn ASL more quickly and effectively. Good language learning requires active learning. Full immersion helps develop better receptive and expressive skills. The participants will find that struggling to put all their thoughts into ASL for these one hour and fifteen minutes in class will have a marked effect on their communicative fluency. Full participation is expected. *Only registered students may attend. Class size limited to 15 participants. This session is sold out.

Happening Nearby: Deaf Cultural Festival

Presented by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art: Honor the rich history of art, identity, and empowerment in the d/Deaf and hard of hearing communities. Explore American Sign Language (ASL) through hands-on art activities and enjoy entertainment from distinctly Deaf perspectives.  ASL and Live English interpretation will be provided for all performances and workshops. Additionally, various interpreters will be stationed around the Info Desk, Kirkwood Hall, and the Sculpture Hall. Once it’s available, refer to the festival schedule for specific info about the types of interpretation offered at each event.  Registration details and a festival schedule will be available about one month before the event. Learn Basic American Sign Language! The Whole Person is excited to once again offer our ASL for All Workshop to the public. Join us in the Community Room at The Whole Person for an engaging and immersive experience in American Sign Language. This workshop includes: – Total immersion into ASL, designed for beginners.– Instruction tailored to practical signs for everyday use.– Opportunities to practice ASL with fellow participants and the instructor. With over 11 million Deaf individuals in the U.S. and more than 10,000 in the Greater Kansas City area, this is a fantastic chance to connect with and support the Deaf community. Crossroads/Westside Urban Hike

Join us for a 3-mile, 3-hour Crossroads/Westside Urban Hike for the signing community (both Deaf and hearing), complete with two ASL interpreters. Together, we’ll explore Union Station history, colorful murals in the Crossroads, the cultural richness of the Westside, a hidden bridge overlooking the West Bottoms, and finish at Café Corazón for a coffee or treat.
