Statement on Racial Injustice

Statement on Addressing Racial Injustice

June 11, 2020

The Whole Person values and respects the diversity of our community and recognizes that no matter what a person’s race, ethnicity, gender or disability, this diversity enriches our lives and the lives of those we serve and their families.

Therefore, as an organization, we join the broader Kansas City community and others across this nation condemning racism and racial biases that have resulted in the mistreatment of, and the tragic loss of life for Black Americans.

It was the Civil Rights Movement for equality that inspired the Disability Rights Movement, which motivated people with disabilities to advocate for many of the positive changes that we enjoy today.

Yet the dream of equal rights for all has yet to be realized, as people with disabilities account for half of the people who lose their life at the hands of police officers across the country. This dangerous trend must end.

The oppression of black people has impacted every aspect of American life. The recent tragedy that resulted in George Floyd losing his life only adds to this tremendous suffering.

Today, The Whole Person stands in solidarity with Black Americans in the fight for these rights and support the many men and women working to find new solutions and a common ground resulting in a stronger, more accepting society for us all.
