Dragons, Differences, and Down Syndrome: A Children's Book with an Important Message

colorful graphic illustration that has a castle and two dragons on top of a hill

Just in time for World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, we're excited to share a beautiful children's book that celebrates differences and promotes inclusivity. "Bailey the Bright Purple Dragon" by author Danielle Arney offers a fresh perspective on acceptance through the adventures of dragons learning to fly together despite their differences.

Dragons Shaping Life Mindsets

Meet Bailey, a bright purple dragon who doesn’t quite fit in with the other dragons at flight school. While Bailey may look different and communicate in unique ways, the inspiring children’s book illustrates how these differing characteristics don't limit potential - they open up new opportunities for success.

Because of the vibrant illustrations and heartwarming storytelling, children can learn that regardless of how they look or communicate, everyone has something valuable to offer. The dragons in the story realize they can achieve their goals and reach new heights by embracing their differences and working together.

Disability Representation in Children's Literature

Books like "Bailey the Bright Purple Dragon" serve an imperative purpose in our communities and classrooms. It’s not often that children with Down syndrome and other differences see themselves represented in the books they read and stories they hear. It is a representation like this that is essential for building self-esteem and helping all children learn about diversity from an early age.

According to the National Down Syndrome Society, Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. It's the most common chromosomal condition, affecting approximately one in every 775 babies born in the United States. People with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays and physical characteristics that may make them look different, but they lead full, spirited lives filled with possibilities.

Aligning with The Whole Person's Mission

At The Whole Person, this book aligns perfectly with our mission of connecting people with disabilities to resources they need while advocating for positive change in the community. We envision a fully accessible community where opportunities and choices are not limited by disability - exactly the message that Bailey's story conveys through its dragon characters.

Inspired by Real-Life Family Experiences

The extra special part of this book? Author Danielle Arney was inspired by her own daughter, Bailey, who has Down syndrome. Arney shares: "Bailey is a born performer with a joyful spirit, diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after birth. She is the light and love of our lives! She loves to dance, cheer, sing, act, and run. Her favorite color is purple, which inspired the title of this book. Just like the purple dragon, Bailey may have some differences, but that never holds her back."

A Tool for Important Life Lessons

"Bailey the Bright Purple Dragon" provides parents, teachers, and community members with an insightful tool to start conversations about inclusion and friendship. Whether you’re reading this book in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day or reading to kick off the school year, this story is a great segway to discuss how we all look and communicate differently but can still form meaningful connections.
